The establishment of Gibbston Valley as a culinary landmark for the Central Otago region is a family story built on the shared passion for fine food, exquisite wine and exceptional service from husband and wife team, Executive Chef Mark Sage (right) and Sous Chef Sue Sage (left).
Bringing a wide range of international experience – from high-profile restaurants to boutique hotels – Executive Chef Mark Sage along with his wife and Sous Chef Sue Sage have combined decades of expertise and a broad range of influences to stamp their own distinctive flavour and style on Gibbston Valley. Their culinary exptertise is behind the gourmet menu at Gibbston Valley Restaurant and A Taste of Gibbston Valley, the new artisan deli and cafe located in Arrowtown.
Each day begins with Mark travelling the region to choose the day’s freshest ingredients from select local producers, while Sue sets the kitchen for the day’s events. Together they work with their team of experienced chefs and other culinary experts to prepare the finest food for their many regular and visiting customers. Behind the scenes, everyone in the kitchen plays an integral part of the restaurant, much like ingredients for a complex yet triumphant recipe.
The Sages' personalized and caring attitude extends to their service. Mark says it's like, "welcoming guests to your home, where everything has to be perfect, yet everyone totally at ease – and not leaving until they are completely satisfied.”
But, the true measure of the team is the quality of the food. It's this that has made Gibbston Valley renowned for its exquisite menu, drawing on the best local produce, finely balanced with the full selection of Gibbston Valley Wines.
No visit to Central Otago is complete without sampling the exceptional service and latest culinary experiences created for the Gibbston Valley Winery Restaurant by the Sages. Their diverse, Mediterranean-style menu features seasonal favorites and daily specials. See the menu here.
